Safety

The Chemistry Department has, according to its bylaws, an institution which is responsible the safety and health of the collaborators in our building, i.e. the safety and health committee. It has the task to assure that the safety infrastructure works correctly, accidents are prevented from occuring, and the members of the departement are properly trained.

Currently the following persons constitute this committee:

NameFunction
Thomas Bally President, delegate of physical chemistry
Peter Belser Secretary, delegate of inorganic chemistry
Norbert Engel Delegeate of organic chemistry
Anne Schuwey Delegate of the technical staff, occupational safety expert
Claire-Lise Chanez Delegate of graduate students / assistants
Christophe Leuenberger Delegate of undergraduate students
Nicolas Hoyler Responsible for the safety at the faculty level

The committee meets about every six weeks and discusses past incicents, planned activities and measures to improve the safety and occupational health in our building.

If you notice a gap or an error with regard to the issues for which the safety committee is responsible, please announce this to a member of the committee, so we can take the necessary measures to improve the situation.

The activities in connection with safety (courses, inspection tours etc.) will be announced on the department website and on this page, whenever dates have been set.

Another instance that is pivotal for the safety is the first intervention group, which kicks into action when an alarm has been triggered. Members of this group can locate where the alarm originated, run there, assess the situation and then take appropriate measures (for example they can quit the alarm, to prevent the fire brigade from rushing to our department). The members of this group have all received thorough training in first aid, firefighting etc. Next to the faculty's five janitors this group includes:

  • Anne Schuwey
  • Fredy Nydegger
  • Xavier Hanselmann
  • Olivier Graber

Documents in connection with safety:

  • Safety brochure [read]
  • Information sheet for external users of our building [read]
